High blood pressure puts you at higher risk of a stroke and a heart attack. This is why it is important to keep your blood pressure within a normal range.
Normal blood pressure should be 120/80 or less. If your blood pressure is consistently 140/90 or above then you will be diagnosed with high blood pressure.
There are usually no symptoms for high blood pressure - this is why it is called the silent killer.
The only way to know if you have high blood pressure is to get it checked by your doctor, practice nurse or pharmacist and to know your blood pressure numbers. This is a painless procedure and only takes a few minutes.
The good news is that high blood pressure can be treated with lifestyle changes and, if necessary, medication.
